Space Marines: Abusing chaplains and you!

Postby Wynce » Tue Sep 10, 2019 8:44 pm

Was playing around with different lists today and I came up with some nasty combos with chaplains. This list is by no means optimized, You can take a repulsor instead of the land raider, Levi dreads instead of ven dreads and intercessors instead of termies. I have all old school stuff though so this is what I came up with. Either a Land raider or a repulsor with PotMS and recitation of focus is hitting on 2s and if you have a captain nearby....it gets gross. What do you guys think?

I like what you are trying to do and I see the potential. One big thing to note, is the chaplain dread also gets prayers. So you will effectively have 4 chaplains to work with. A big weakness of the chaplains however, is that the chaplains must be on the battlefield to do prayers at the beginning of your turn, so you can't deep-strike your chaplain termies and then pray. Now, a simple fix (if you have them) is Chaplains with Jump Packs. This allows them to be in position for your termie drops to give them a boost in charge distance.

Ya i was pumped when they gave the chaplain ven dread errata, i really didn't think they would (battlescribe just doesn't show he has a litany. Ya i really i would take two jump pack chaplains. One nice thing about the termie chalain is you can set him up behind the land raider and just have him hop in. I also dont know if I should be giving all the chaplains recitation of focus or try one with the +1 wound prayer. If the Salamanders get the strat back with +1 to wound on flamers the +1 to wound prayer might be real good with aggressors or centurions essentially letting flamers wound on 2+.

Chappies hopping into the land raider would just make them not be able to do their jobs for multiple turns. I definitely feel that with this list, you are on the money with Assault Centurions and the flamers. In a quick comparison, I feel that 5 assault centurions would be better than 6 aggressors. Yes, you don't get to double-shoot for centurions, but you get a unit that punches better in melee (16 attacks hitting on 3+ at S10 for centurions vs 20 attacks hitting on 4+ at S8 for aggressors) and is overall more durable IMO (4 wounds 2+ save per guy on centurions vs 3 wounds 3+ save per guy on aggressors).

The +1 Wound prayer is good as a small utility option. Stick that on a redemptor shooting an infantry screen, and watch your opponents wall just disappear. Or give it to an anti-tank unit if a scary vehicle/big thing is coming at you.

Ya Cents are on the list to get, they are just on the expensive side so it will prolly be a Christmas thing. But I look forward to running them, they seem great with 90 shots on average and being super punchy.

Alas doubling up on chaplain prayers doesn't do anything, only one type of prayer can be done per turn . You can't even do the same one if the first one fails.

I had seen one guy really like this build

White Scars Jump Chaplain - 3 Attacks
Master Crafted Power Fist D3+1 D
Mantra of Strength - +1 A,S and D
Warlord Trait Chogorian Storm - +D3 Attacks on the Charge
2nd Warlord Hunter's Instinct - +1 to hit and wound vs Monsters and Vehicles
Angels of Death +1 Attack.

So in total against vehicles and monsters on the charge you are getting
6-8 Attacks
Hit on 2's
Wound T9 or less vehicles or monsters on 2's
AP -3
3-5 damage per wound

AP-4 and 4-6 Damage if you go all the way and charge on the assault doctrine turn. But this guy probably isn't living that long.

Not sure that a captain with a thunder hammer doesn't do this better but the chaplain does it cheaper. The mantra of strength seems like it can really stack with the plethora of other benefits. I'm sure there are going to be good combos with other chapters.

I'm happy to play lower points levels with people who are staring out or building up new forces
Fair warning my doofy daemons have 3rd party models, scratch builds, old warhammer models and I haven't moved all their bases over to the 40k ones yet! Happy to switch to either Tau or White Scars.

Ya you can make chaplains nasty. Not sure if WS have access to the relic crozious in the space marine book but they are nasty. The Chaplain ven dread is almost too much

for 168 points you get

Only move 6
9 Wounds
t7
3+5++6++ Save

4 attacks base
1a shock assult
1a 1s 1dmg prayer
1s (built in)
1a 1s MoH (with libby)
1a 1s (imperiums sword warlord trait)
re rolling charges

you end up with
8 attacks
-3 AP
4 dmg
Hitting on 2s rerolling
Str 18 (wounding on 2s)

compare that to the Jump Chaplain (Slaplain...)

for 85 You get

12 Move (and fly keyword letting you assault fliers)
4 Wounds
3+4++ Save

3 Attacks Base
1a shock assult
1a 1s 1d Payer
1a 1s MoH
1a 1s (warlord trait)
rerolling charges

ending up with
7 attacks
-2 AP
9 str
4 dmg
Hitting on 2s
no rerolls

Hard to say which one is better But i have noticed Jump characters to be vulnerable to overwatch, though looks like raven guard gets a relic jump pack to stop that. The dread one shots a knight on average though XD
